Blog Reflection

Blog Reflections-general experiences(+/-), small groups, and classroom connections

I felt very intimidated by the thought of blogging. I had heard of blogging, but I had no idea what blogging was about. It was fairly easy to set up, but it was difficult to get the blog to actually work. A html problem with took days to correct. I tried, but I just could not figure it out. Finally, I solicited help and I was able to correct the problem.

Using the blogs with small groups was much better than the whole class experience. I was able to communicate with that select group of people rather than trying to respond to all of the blogs. However, I think it would have been better to decide on the dates that group members should respond by. Responding between September 29th and October 7th was too long of a time frame and too vague.

I made several classroom connections through the use of blogs. I learned how I can use blogs in my own classroom, and I also gained information about what my colleagues are doing in their classrooms. Without this blog, I would not have been privileged to this information.

Using Ipods In My Classroom

I was asked how could I use iPods in my classroom. At first, I could not think of an idea that would allow me to connect iPods to my current lessons. After some thought, I remembered that my students participate in a self-evaluation and a group critique after each video project. I also researched the apple website for ideas. The website was very helpful and included lots of details. Then a light bulb came on....We could incorporate iPods into our video critique by creating a podcast. The podcast would allow us to share our videos with the world. The students could use the tools that we already have such as, a video camera, iMovie and GarageBand, we could publish our podcasts to the iTunes Store where it can be shared. We could solicit critiques from other students throughout the world. Sharing is caring. Wooow this is awesome! Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions????

Hand Held Computers

The high school students in Orland, Illinois are engaged in an exciting technology pilot program. The Consolidated High School District 230 made use of handheld computers. These devices were bought by the district, then sold and leased to students for use throughout their classrooms. The district also provided these handheld computers to all students who could not afford to purchase one. The handhelds are small enough to hold in one hand and they provide a one to one technology ratio between teachers and each student. The computers have been used for fitness and nutrition to compute fitness goals that measure nutritional intake and physical activity. In Biology classes students compute ecological footprints in relation to the ecosystem. English classes use handhleds to create journal entries. Earth Science students use the computers to measure the speed of sound by measuring strikes of lightening and claps of thunder. I found this to be an innovative way of connecting education and technology.

Students and Technology

I was very surprised by some of the responses that I got from my students about the way that they use technology. One of the students had a lot of opportunities, experience, and confidence with technology. His experience included creating his own web page and spending hours at a time to surf the web and find out information on his favorite subject.....computers. He visits surplus stores to purchase used computers so that he can use various computer parts to create his own computers. He also volunteered to "fix" one of my classroom computers that was having difficulties. Imagine that. The other students basically only used technology such as the computer when it was required. They complete homework assignments and projects using the districts connect2school system. One of them has a digital video camera which is used to record family events. She is taking video production because she would like to learn to edit her home movies. The students' main interest also included computer game systems, burning cd's, downloading music and the use of the handy dandy ipod.
